Historian Rick Shenkman on Donald Trump: “All the worst things in American history piled together”

I want to have hope because I understand how the human brain works. That ultimately makes me an optimist because we will confront reality at some point, regardless of our personal commitments. As a society, we will confront reality. The question is, does it take five years, 10 years, 20 years? In that period an awful lot of horrible things can happen.

What makes me frightened is that Donald Trump has now been president for more than a year and a half. It’s like all the worst things in American history have been piled together and shoved into one presidency. It can get much worse.

White House: Kelly looked away after Trump’s attack on Germany because he was disappointed in breakfast

Trump at a NATO summit breakfast on Wednesday said that Germany is “captive to Russia” over a gas pipeline deal.

„If you look at it, Germany is a captive of Russia because they supply,“ the president said. „They got rid of their coal plants. They got rid of their nuclear. They’re getting so much of the oil and gas from Russia. I think it’s something that NATO has to look at. I think it’s very inappropriate.“

Video from the breakfast shows Kelly and other senior officials appearing to react to the comment. Kelly pursed his lips and looked away from the president.

Facial expression experts who analyzed the video for The Washington Post said that Kelly’s body language signaled irritation and displeasure, but not “hardcore anger.”

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders offered an explanation for Kelly’s reaction to The Post.

“[Kelly] was displeased because he was expecting a full breakfast and there were only pastries and cheese,” Huckabee Sanders said.

EU must ‚prepare for worst-case scenarios‘ under Trump, top official warns

In a pre-summit invitation letter to the leaders of EU countries, Tusk wrote that “trans-Atlantic relations are under immense pressure due to the policies of President Trump”.

A senior EU official added: “We are more and more concerned that these are not just incidents, it starts to look like a pattern. The pattern of an American doctrine in which there are no friends only enemies.”

U.S. assessing cost of keeping troops in Germany as Trump battles with Europe

The Pentagon is analyzing the cost and impact of a large-scale withdrawal or transfer of American troops stationed in Germany, amid growing tensions between President Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, according to people familiar with the work.

The effort follows Trump’s expression of interest in removing the troops, made during a meeting earlier this year with White House and military aides, U.S. officials said. Trump was said to have been taken aback by the size of the U.S. presence, which includes about 35,000 active-duty troops, and complained that other countries were not contributing fairly to joint security or paying enough to NATO.

Since the end of World War II, the U.S. troop presence in Germany has been viewed as a bulwark against a potential Russian invasion of Europe and a staging ground for U.S. operations in Africa and the Middle East.
